40/60 Photography: Pittsburgh
Hey all!
I'm here with the rest of the FortySixty Photography crew to do a commercial shoot. We all met up for the first time yesterday. Dave Allen came down from Ohio to chill with us and do some photos. Here's a couple snaps from yesterday's activities:

I think we have a great dynamic team going on and we're all excited for this weeks shoot. Today, we did some more prop shopping and gathering the rest of what we needed!
Stay Tuned for some more updates!

Editing the Flip MinoHD Video Files
As some of you may know, I'm beginning to venture into the HD video world. I have the Flip MinoHD and it is one of the neatest camera's out there. For a little less than $200, you can have a HD video camera that fits in your pocket. The video that this thing puts out, is quite remarkable for what it is. It's not the absolutely best quality video, but it is HD and it does a fine job for what I need it to do.

Now, I've always been interested in video production ever since I was younger. My friends and I would make skate video's on our parents old Sony Camcorders, the ones that sat upon the shoulder! We never had any means of editing the video but we had a blast.
Fast forward to my time in College - My roommate and I made a short film for a video contest/show that the school was putting on. That was my first time with HD video. Shot with some Canon HD camera's and edited in Final Cut Pro.
Fast forward to the preset! Alright, so now I got this nifty lil' camcorder....time to search for some video editing software. In the past, I would just use Windows Movie Maker to make the 2 BTS videos that I have. That was nice, easy and simple...but now we're dealing with a much higher video quality. Knowing that the Flip's video files are MPEG4, I figured that they would need to be converted first, before being edited. So, thanks to the blog post made by the one and only, Zach Arias. He recommended using the Squared5 MPEG Converter. I'm quite happy with it and i'm sure that you will be too. They offer a whole slew of options that you can convert the Flip's files into.
Since Zach uses a Mac and I'm still on a window's OS, the settings were a bit different on the converter. If you use a mac, you can most definitely use his settings.
Here's the settings I use for the Converter:

I went to "Export to Quicktime" then chose what you see there above. Originally, I went with "Apple Motion Jpeg A" (Or something like that) and that would cause my minute and a half long video file...to be 2.3GB! If you choose H.264, file size will be smaller (455mb compared to the t-rex of 2.3GB) and you'll have the same quality!
Now, once the converter is done doing it's thing..you can now import that file into Adobe Premiere and edit the content to your heart's content. Once you're done, you'll have to export the video! Here's the part that some people get confused on. Do not pick "Export > Movie". Use Export > Adobe Media Encoder instead. It'll be at the end of the list of options when you go to export. It does a much better job.. Here are the settings I use...so that my video comes out in HD:

That's about it. Let premiere do it's thing and then you'll have a finished video! Let me know if you have any further questions. Leave a comment here or catch me on Twitter: @peteyphoto and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

New Year, New Site, New Sight
The infamous New Years Eve Blog post. Oh what a year 2009 has been.
For me, it has been absolutely incredible. I never thought my photography career would have progressed like it has. I remember about the days that I would dream about having some AlienBees of my own. I would have to say that 2009 has had more ups, than downs for me.
My very first shoot of 2009 was on the 3rd of January, with the band known as Exit Ghost:

That shoot...really kicked off my year. I had a blast shooting those guys.
For those photos, I used my Homemade DIY beauty dish, made from a $1.99 plastic bowl from a party store, that I spray painted and followed an online how-to. I only had my Vivitar 283 and Focal M500T hot shoe flashes. That, folks, is where it all started. I was hooked after that.
From there, I was able to reach my AlienBee gear list of goals by mid January/February. For once in my life, a dream of mine was coming true.
From there, most of you have seen my progression on Flickr. Which, I'm very grateful for all of the kind words and critiques that I get there. Big thank you to those who favorite the photos. You guys have helped me out a ton.
I'm not a huge fan of resolutions, rather, Goals. Some of mine would be:
- Purchase 5D, 17-40mm f/4L, 85mm F/1.8, 24mm F/2.8. Just a couple I have in mind
- Shoot Bigger Clients
- Shoot for AP
- Develop/define my style more
- Push myself harder than ever before - In my lighting techniques, editing, composition, color, placement, the whole 9 yards.
Even more thankful for the events that have happened. I went from using home-made light modifiers, to being part of 40/60 Photo - Which I could not be any more excited about. I remember when I used to look up to them and their amazing photos.
Like I said in my first video, You guys will be seeing a whole slew of video updates & behind the scenes photos and a lot more things from us at 40/60! I re-designed my online portfolio so I'll be launching that either late tonight or tomorrow.
I just have one last thing to say:
2010 will be the Year Of The Photographer.
Lets push the envelope. We got 365 Days, lets do this!

Light with a Beauty Dish - Alien Bees
I've decided that I really need to blog more, and have some more helpful content. So, here goes:

Over the past year, I've learned a lot with each one of my shoots. Even more so, I've learned more about the light modifiers that I do have (22" white beauty dish, large softbox and large octabox). I've used my beauty dish a lot over the course of these past 11 months and have become quite comfortable using it. I also find it very easy to work with on location, since it's less prone to wind, when used on a boom, compared to a large softbox or octabox.
"Knowing how certain light modifiers work, why they work & how to use them to their fullest potential is key. Knowledge is key. Even more so when experience is coupled with knowledge."
I've found out what works & what doesn't work. More often, I have learned that I still have a lot to learn! Today, I'm sharing with you all my recent experiences with the AlienBee (Paul C. Buff) 22" white beauty dish.
More after the jump:
Post Processing - Before and After
Earlier on my twitter I asked to see if there would be any interested in me posting up a before and after shot, to show the post processing that went into my latest pic of the Young Victorians .
I do a bulk of the processing in LightRoom 2.0. I'm a huge fan of that program...not only for editing photos but also for work flow. I find that I can keep my photos a heck of a lot more organized, and thus, editing takes a tad bit less time. Which, is always a plus because that leaves for more time shooting!
Without further ado:
Before - (SOOC - absolutely no editing)
After (LightRoom 2.0 Adjustments, dodging and burning in Photoshop CS3 with some slight curves adjustments)
Here's a side by side comparison:
I realized after I put this together...that it's NOT the exact same shot, but you guys get the idea.
And, if you haven't already, be sure to swing by http://www.wholewhyworld.com - the forum by photographers for photographers. Put on by the guys of 40/60 Photo .
Petey’s DIY Gel Pack
I've always liked DIY's, even more so when it came to some sort of photo gear.
Gels have been a thing I've been meaning to get for a while. In the meantime, I tried to make some on my own. The first time was with some file folder dividers -the colored ones you'll find at your local staples or wal-mart for $2.99.
Those didn't work at all. I didn't get any sort of color out of them. After that attempt, I forgot all about it and didn't do any more research since then.
I was on my TweetDeck the other day and I could have sworn I saw someone tweet about DIY Gels - BINGO! I finally found this zip file of colors that seem to work really well.
All I did was...put the colors I wanted printed into a folder, put it on my thumb drive and took a trip to my local Staples. I had the printing section print out the colors on some overhead transparencies.

For a total of 9 different colors, it only cost me $4.99 ($5 and some change)
They were printed for only .49 a 8.5 x 11 sheet!
Enjoy! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!
